Beyond the Beam | Where Laser Science Meets Beauty, Business & Opportunity
By Lyndsey Brantley | Founder, International Laser Institute
Have you ever thought about starting a career in the beauty industry but weren't sure where to begin? Maybe you're already a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist looking to expand your skills. Or perhaps you're ready for a career change and want to enter an industry that combines technology, science, and helping people feel confident in their skin.
And let's talk about something else that's probably on your mind: Can I actually make good money doing this?
That's a fair question, and it's one I believe every prospective student should ask before investing in their education.
As an entrepreneur in the beauty and wellness industry, I've seen firsthand how developing a specialized skill can open doors. I've also met talented individuals who wanted to further their education but felt overwhelmed by the requirements, the financial investment, or simply not knowing where to begin.
That's one of the reasons I founded International Laser Institute (ILI) in Houston, Texas.
My goal was to create an educational environment where students gain more than technical knowledge. I wanted them to understand the science, prioritize client safety, recognize their career options, and develop the confidence to pursue opportunities in an evolving industry.
So, if you've been researching how to become a laser technician in Texas, let's break down what you need to know.
Laser hair removal is a specialized treatment that uses concentrated light energy to target hair follicles and achieve long-term hair reduction.
But here's something I always emphasize: Operating a laser isn't simply about knowing which buttons to press.
A knowledgeable laser technician must understand laser physics, skin anatomy, treatment protocols, contraindications, and client safety.
This becomes especially important when treating different skin tones. Not every client's skin responds to laser energy the same way, which is why understanding skin of color, appropriate laser selection, and safe treatment practices is essential.
At ILI, we emphasize understanding the why behind each treatment, not just memorizing the steps.
Because when you're working with someone's skin, education and safety must always come first.
This is one of the most common questions prospective students ask.
And the answer often surprises them.
No, you do not have to be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist to begin the standard laser hair removal certification pathway in Texas.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) oversees laser hair removal certification and establishes the requirements for practicing legally.
For individuals beginning their journey, the first step is completing an approved 40-hour Laser Hair Removal Apprentice-in-Training program.
This training introduces important topics such as:
After completing the required training, eligible individuals can apply for their Apprentice-in-Training certificate through TDLR.
An important distinction: completing training does not automatically grant permission to perform laser procedures. You must obtain the appropriate state certificate and follow the applicable supervision requirements.
Texas recognizes four individual laser hair removal certification levels.
Level 1: Apprentice-in-Training
This is your starting point. After completing an approved 40-hour training program and obtaining your state certificate, you may begin performing procedures under the required direct supervision.
Level 2: Laser Hair Removal Technician
After completing at least 100 qualifying laser hair removal procedures within 12 months under the direct supervision of a Senior Laser Hair Removal Technician or Laser Hair Removal Professional, you may apply to advance to the Technician level.
Level 3: Senior Laser Hair Removal Technician
This level requires additional supervisory experience, including directly supervising at least 100 laser hair removal procedures within 12 months, audited by a certified Laser Hair Removal Professional.
Level 4: Laser Hair Removal Professional
The highest individual laser hair removal certification level in Texas requires additional qualifications, approved professional certification, and examination requirements.
Each level represents an opportunity to develop your skills, expand your knowledge, and advance your professional qualifications.
My advice? Don't become so focused on reaching Level 4 that you overlook the importance of building a strong foundation at Level 1.
A successful career starts with knowing your craft.
Now let's discuss the question I know many of you have been waiting for.
What's the earning potential in the laser and aesthetics industry?
The answer depends on several factors, including your experience, certifications, location, employer, compensation structure, and ability to build and retain clientele.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, skincare specialists earned a national median wage of $45,330 annually, or $21.79 per hour, in May 2025.
The highest-paid 10% of workers in this broader occupation earned more than $39.45 per hour.
While these figures represent skincare specialists generally rather than laser technicians exclusively, they offer a helpful starting point for understanding earnings in the aesthetics field.
What Can Influence Your Earning Potential?
One thing I've learned from operating a spa is that compensation in the beauty industry isn't always limited to a single hourly rate.
Depending on your employer and compensation agreement, your income may include:
What About Opening Your Own Laser Business?
For some people, the long-term goal isn't simply to work in the industry. It's to build a business.
As someone who has built businesses in beauty, wellness, and education, I understand the appeal of entrepreneurship.
Owning a laser hair removal business can create opportunities to generate revenue through individual services, treatment packages, memberships, and other offerings within your legal scope of practice.
But I also believe in being transparent.
Business revenue is not the same as personal income or profit.
Equipment, rent, staffing, insurance, marketing, licensing, taxes, and operating expenses all impact what a business owner actually takes home.
And operating a laser business in Texas requires compliance with applicable facility, personnel, and medical oversight requirements.
I encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to think beyond what a single treatment costs and learn how to build a financially sustainable business.
There is earning potential in this industry, but your results will depend on your knowledge, business decisions, market, experience, and commitment to continued development.
We'll explore laser technician salaries, commission structures, and laser business earning potential in greater detail in a future Beyond the Beam article.
When researching laser hair removal training in Houston, Texas, I encourage you to look beyond tuition prices.
Affordability absolutely matters, but so does the quality of your education.
Before enrolling, ask these questions:
At International Laser Institute, our training emphasizes laser science, skin of color education, safety protocols, treatment techniques, and professional development.
We believe students deserve an education that prepares them to understand the technology and the responsibility that comes with providing aesthetic treatments.
Let's address another question that comes up frequently: How am I going to pay for school?
I've spoken with prospective students who are passionate about entering the aesthetics industry but immediately become discouraged by the cost.
And I understand.
You're managing real responsibilities. You may have children, a full-time job, household expenses, or other financial commitments.
Investing in your education should be a thoughtful decision.
That's why I encourage prospective students to explore available laser technician scholarships, tuition assistance, and financing options before deciding that professional training is out of reach.
At ILI, we want students to understand the options that may help make their educational investment more manageable.
My advice is simple:
Ask the questions. Explore your options. Make an informed decision.
You may discover a path forward that fits your situation better than you expected.
Scholarships and financing are subject to eligibility, availability, and applicable terms.
One of the things I love about the aesthetics industry is that it offers opportunities to continue learning and developing professionally.
Depending on your qualifications and career goals, laser hair removal training may help you pursue positions in:
With additional experience, education, and appropriate qualifications, some professionals pursue training, management, leadership, or entrepreneurship opportunities.
However, certification alone does not guarantee employment, a particular salary, or business success.
Building a career requires effort, experience, professionalism, and continued education.
I also encourage students to think about the kind of professional they want to become.
Do you want to specialize in working with diverse skin tones? Build a loyal clientele? Become a leader in a medical spa? Eventually operate your own facility?
Whatever your goals may be, having a long-term vision can help you make intentional decisions about your education.
If there's one thing I want you to take away from this article, it's this:
You don't have to have your entire future figured out to begin investing in it.
Some of the most meaningful opportunities begin with a willingness to learn something new.
I founded International Laser Institute because I believe education can create opportunities, and because I know how important it is to receive guidance from people who understand both the technical and business sides of this industry.
Whether you're exploring laser hair removal training for the first time or looking to expand your qualifications, I encourage you to take your goals seriously.
Research the requirements. Understand the financial commitment. Ask about earning potential. Choose your training carefully.
And most importantly, invest in becoming knowledgeable, capable, and confident in your work.
Your future in aesthetics begins with knowledge. What you build from there is up to you.
